Real Life Meets the Workplace: A Legal Primer (In English) (register now!)
Drawing on their experience providing advice to employees and employers, four lawyers from Nelligan O’Brien Payne’s Employment Law Group will canvass common legal issues that arise in the workplace. The panel, led by nationally recognised employment law lawyer Janice Payne, will explore how legislators, arbitrators, and courts are gradually re-writing workplace law to acknowledge and address changing workplaces and the challenges of juggling “real life”—child care, elder care, family status, illness—with the expectations of employers. Join Janice, Ainslie Benedict, Julie Skinner, and Ella Forbes-Chilibeck for a lively discussion of these issues.

A Woman’s Heart in Health and Disease—Who is at risk and what can she do? (In English) (register now!)
Coronary disease remains the leading cause of death in Canadian women. Yet many women do not realise they are at risk. Although a woman’s heart looks very similar to a man’s heart on the outside, it is affected by heart disease in a different way. Women need to understand how to stay “heart healthy”, recognise the first signs of heart disease, and then know what to do. Heart disease is largely preventable but education and action are key. In this presentation, we will discuss how to assess the risk of developing heart disease and present a simple plan to prevent it and maintain heart health. We will address how symptoms can be different in women, how to recognise them, and what to do about it. We will also touch on proven therapies, in particular coronary interventions. Be informed and stay healthy. You owe it to yourself and your family.

Maternal Health and Well-Being in Canada and Abroad (In French) (register now!)
2011 marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. Much progress has been made in the area of maternal health and well-being in Canada over the last 100 years. In this presentation, Dr. Lalonde will discuss the current status of maternal health and the dangers and challenges of maternity in the world, especially in the poorest countries and within the traditionally underserved communities in Canada. As well, as more and more women are choosing to have children later in life, Dr. Lalonde will provide advice on, and discuss issues around, delayed child bearing. Finally, myths about care during pregnancy and the importance of preparing a birth plan and knowing a few delivery positions prior to delivery will be discussed.
